'ISITHUNZI' [2020]

35mm Film f100
© Emmanuel Munano

The word Isithunzi in the nguni language (isiZulu, isiNdebele and isiXhosa) has a double meaning. Firstly it refers to a physical shadow - a dark area or shape produced by rays of light, and secondly it refers to the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect. I am interested in the second defination in the context of showcasing the state or quality of life of black people living in township and the city.

The project is a reflection of my personal exploration and observations of everyday life as a self taught photographer. As I travel to spaces I have never explored, I interrogate my understanding image and identity.

The shadow (isithunzi) a recurring element in the images. It is a catalyst of how I gain access to people and spaces.

It is easier to point your camera at a shadow rather than at a person.
